Juan Pablo Gómez’s practice focuses on international commercial and investment arbitration. He has been involved in over 30 complex and high-stakes disputes under a variety of rules and institutions such as the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He has a track record of success representing clients ranging from multinational corporations to public companies and States, in several industries including construction, energy, mining, telecommunications, and transportation.

Juan Pablo has worked in both the public and private sector on dispute management and business practices. Before joining Adell & Merizalde, he served as counsel at Refinería Cartagena, Colombia's largest State- owned refining company, where he was involved in many cases, including the largest ongoing ICC construction arbitration. Additionally, he worked at two leading law firms, advising clients on transactions and disputes related to some of the country's largest infrastructure projects.

He has been invited to participate as a speaker at several conferences and publishes regularly in academic journals. He is also an active member of the ICC Task Force on Disability Inclusion in International Arbitration, and holds leadership positions in numerous arbitration-related interest groups. He works as an adjunct lecturer at Universidad de los Andes and Universidad El Bosque at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and also acts as research fellow for several international organizations and universities.

Juan Pablo keeps an active pro bono practice, advising individuals and NGOs on human rights litigation and good governance practices.

Relevant Matters

  • Represents the Republic of Colombia in an ICSID arbitration initiated by a European investor concerning the building and maintenance of a public port.

  • Represented the Republic of Guatemala in the negotiation of an ICSID award with an investor from the US in a case worth over US$ 240 million concerning measures in the energy sector.

  • Represented a South American State-owned company in an ICC arbitration against an EPC contractor for cost overruns and delays in the construction of a crude oil refinery.  Over US$ 5 billion in dispute.

  • Represented a European investor in an ICSID case against a South American country arising from regulatory measures of domestic authorities on the mining industry.  Over US$ 200 million in dispute. 

  • Represented a South American company in a multi-party and multi-contract international arbitration against a public entity concerning a large energy project in the region.  Over US$ 3 billion in dispute.  

  • Represented a European power company in an ICC arbitration against South American enterprises arising from post-M&A disputes following the acquisition of a gas supply public entity.  

  • Represented South American State-owned companies in an ICC arbitration against an EPC contractor for the construction of a power production asset. 

  • Represented a South American public-owned oil & gas company in arbitrations and settlement proceedings with several contractors and subcontractors of a construction megaproject.  Over US$ 130 million in dispute.

  • Represented a South American telecommunications company in a New York-based ICC arbitration against a Latin American State-agency for breach of a software management contract.​​

  • Represented a South American public entity in an international arbitration against a European contractor regarding the supply of equipment for a natural resource’s extractive enterprise.  Over US$ 100 million in dispute. 

  • Represented a South American company in a complex corporate arbitration against a minority shareholder arising from alleged problems with a stock issuance operation.
